This painting is characteristic of Berlind's onsite oil sketches, many of which went on to
become larger paintings on linen. Observed in the upstate New York landscape, it
evokes the apprehension and mood of an oncoming storm in summer.

 

Robert Berlind (1938 – 2015) was an American painter, writer, and teacher whose work has been shown in numerous galleries, among them Ruth Siegel, Tibor di Nagy, David Findlay, and Lennon, Weinberg. His critical writing has appeared in Art in America, Border Crossings and The Brooklyn Rail, in many artists' catalogues, and, In 2013 he received the prestigious Art
Writers Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation in association with Creative Capital. Berlind has taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, The School of the Institute of Fine Arts, Chicago, at Yale, and at the time of his death, was Professor Emeritus at the School of Art and Design at SUNY Purchase. He has twice received awards from the American Academy of Arts
and Letters as well as grants from the NEA and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. He was a member of the National Academy and received their B. Altman Award for Painting in 2007 and the Award for Excellence in Painting in 2015. His work is included in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Colby College Museum of Art, Neuberger Museum, The Weatherspoon, The Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Museum, and National Academy Museum.
